In March, VNA began a new partnership with the American Red Cross (ARC) focusing on emergency preparedness and home and fire safety education.
The VNA kicks off our new initiative- VNA Home Safety this month. Our goal is to promote the health, well-being and home safety as it relates to fire safety of our patients in all of the communities we serve in and around the Philadelphia area.
Why do we need to know about fire safety?
There are 7 deaths each day related to home fires with the incidence of home fires increasing by 8% since 2000.
Through this partnership, we will be better equipped to inform our patients on home and fire safety and increase their access to working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and a first aid kit. Clinicians will be instrumental in helping to identify patients who may be in need and at greatest risk.
Patients and families can receive direct telephone education on emergency preparedness, home fire safety and register to receive a free smoke detector through the American Red Cross Smoke Alarm Hotline: 215-299-4029 or through their website www.soundthealarm.org.
The American Red Cross has many free resources, tools and educational materials at www.redcross.org as well as with their free apps from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
